The Pro Scrum
Background & Training Effect
The Pro Scrum is part of The Collision King Technical Training Range and has been designed and created to give the coach and players a series of different challenges relating to the Scrum and Maul. It is a complete scrum system which enables coaches and players to work on a number of technical build ups on just one piece of equipment.
The Pro Scrum has many features that will develop your scrum from individual work through to working in units and then finally to your full scrum set-up. Due to the unique design of the machine it will test your players in many different ways e.g. accurate body height, individual and collective movement principles and techniques, working your players under different types of fatigue and team cohesion. ThePro Scrum also has a separate maul attachment that can easily be added to the machine to practice different set-ups of maul formation.
GSI Performance has reinforced its position as No.1 for the innovation of technical training equipment for Rugby Union with the launch of their new and patented Pro Scrum, which will be available from Rhino Rugby from June 2018.
Key features on the Pro Scrum include:
- Circular base that encourages straight and balanced drives
- Adjustable loosehead and tighthead pads to reflect variable prop sizes
- New loosehead-specific pad to mimic real-life scrum position
- Side binding pads with match jersey fabric
- Bungee-spring loaded heads for adjustable resistance
- Maul-attachment option
- Rounded base-plate design reduces impact on pitch and suitable for artificial and hybrid pitches
The Rhino Pro Scrum is the result of more than five years of design, testing and prototypes with the final version of the machine being hand-built in Rhino’s Somerset engineer base late last year 2017. “We wanted to create a machine that reflected the varying different needs of the modern-day scrum,” explains Richie Gray who, as founder of Global Sports Innovation (GSI), Gray has created more than 20 products for Rhino which in turn has changed the way that the player and coach prepare for the whole area of tackle and collision globally, including the Collision King technical training range and the Multi-Skills Bag. “The Rhino Pro Scrum is flexible in every sense to create a realistic scrum situation. It reflects the different shapes and sizes of the front row, ultimately encouraging constant and accurate technique.”
Already, the machine has gained a number of world-class admirers from players and coaches.
South Africa, Sharks and Montpellier Herault prop Jannie du Plessis, said of the Rhino Pro Scrum –
“The Rhino Pro Scrum moves completely differently to any other sled that I have used throughout my career due to the unique circular base that the machine is built on.
This change in design makes it even more important that as an eight you are working in unison or you will not control the machine, with the other key features it is quite simply the best Scrum-sled on the market. Seeing that it moves differently it enables a pack of forwards to work on many things that were previously not possible.”
Georgian prop Davit Kabriashvili, said –
“A key feature for my own individual technique is that you can adjust the scrum pads on the head of the Rhino Pro Scrum machine to the correct width. Many Scrum heads worldwide are to narrow which affects your initial set-up and transfer of weight and power through the scrum machine itself.”
His international colleague, Mikheil Nariashvili, added –
“ The new inter changeable Loose-head configuration on the Rhino Pro Scrum makes your training session far more realistic, also each scrum pad is individually spring loaded which takes away continual jarring that you receive on a non-spring loaded head machine.”
